Abuse of the elderly is a human rights issue and a important social problem and emerging health requires a multidisciplinary approach and commitment of the institutions, social organizations and the whole society.

This publication is the result of joint work of different institutions and professionals who have actively participated in the various work sessions.Alt Penedès (Catalonia, Spain) Guide for action against elder abuse comprises two specific protocols boarding abuse:

  • Firstly, Protocol presents specific domestic approach. This protocol sets out the actions that are performed when the detected case of abuse in care services or resources to develop factual and non-permanent, and do not enter residential or institutionalization for people applying to them (ABS, SSB, Mossos d’Esquadra, local police and telecare PADES).
  • Secondly, Protocol presents the specific institutional approach. This protocol sets out the actions that are performed when the detected case of abuse resources or services that older people are admitted to stay there are hospitalized or provide any kind of residential care day or night ( nursing homes, day care centers, health centers, hospitals, day hospitals, centers for the elderly and EAR). This approach enabled, then, when the person is admitted to a residential resort, is hospitalized or are users of any institution day.
